The fast-paced digital landscape is constantly expanding and evolving for small businesses, leaving behind those that aren't able to keep up. The businesses that can keep up are more likely to establish a notable online presence and successfully connect with their target audience.
The internet and social media have revolutionized how brands and small businesses can communicate with their customers and build loyal communities around them. It's true what they say- having an online presence is no longer optional; it's an essential part of a well-rounded marketing plan. With platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X, to name a few, you have the exact same opportunity as your competitors to create a virtual storefront that operates 24/7. The best part? It's FREE! Of course, you'll need to allocate a budget if you're interested in utilizing paid advertising on these platforms (I will dive more in-depth into paid social soon in an upcoming blog). However, I'm a firm believer that if you utilize each social media platform's tools at your disposal efficiently and resourcefully, you don't need to spend on advertising, and you can completely rely on organic social media practices to reach your goals.
You may be asking what organic social media is, and how does one use social media "efficiently and resourcefully"? Well, I'm glad you asked!
Organic social media is any activity that isn't paid advertising and uses free social media tools to build and engage with a community or following. This includes simply using social platforms and, for example, posting a photo, story, or reel on Instagram, or reposting, liking, or quoting a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Furthermore, by "efficiently", I mean using it in a way that benefits your business's bottom line as much as possible, and optimizing where needed as time goes on. For example, on Instagram, you can post a photo with a descriptive caption using relevant keywords, post a story or reel, respond to comments and direct messages, and engage with other customers and/or businesses by liking, sharing and commenting on their posts. When you perform each and every one of these aforementioned actions, you're efficiently utilizing every resource available to you on Instagram to get the most out of the platform.
When it comes to using social media efficiently and resourcefully, there are so many ways to do so, many of which you'll learn as you use each social platform more actively and frequently.
SPREADING BRAND AWARENESS
Your brand is your identity- from your logo and fonts to your colors and tone of voice, all of these things add up to create the exact way you want your audience and customers to perceive you. Spreading brand awareness via social media is often the first step towards business and community growth. It enables small businesses to convey their core values and tell their story in a way that is genuine and relatable. Regular and engaging posts, combined with compelling visuals and a keen ability to keep up with (and appropriately participate in) trends, can make a lasting impact and propel your brand to becoming a trusted and recognizable one.
CONNECTING WITH YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
One of the best aspects of social media is its ability to facilitate direct connections between small businesses and their target audience. Participating in real-time conversations and responding to customers' comments and direct messages falls under the organic social category. This kind of connection provides invaluable insights into customer preferences, pain points, and feedback; it is also a great way to establish a human element in your business. The more followers feel like they can reach you on a personal level with questions or concerns and that you are not just another business that only cares about sales, the more likely they are to support your business, trust you, and remain loyal customers for the long haul.
COST-EFFECTIVE MARKETING
It's no secret that traditional marketing channels can cost a pretty penny, making them a huge challenge for many small businesses. Social media marketing, on the other hand, is often much more affordable and offers a significant ROI (return on investment). However, as I previously mentioned, if you use social media and all its free tools at your disposal via organic practices, spending on ads isn't necessary. Social media also presents an opportunity for global reach at little to no cost, which means that even the smallest local business can connect and engage with a worldwide audience, effectively opening up new markets and customer segments that could not otherwise be reached. Each social channel also provides in-depth analytics to help you understand your audience and make data-driven decisions, essentially helping to give you a competitive edge against your competition so you can stand out in an already-crowded digital space.
All in all, if there's one thing I'd like for you to gather from this blog, it's that social media is an invaluable tool for small businesses in the modern business landscape. In summary, it provides a cost-effective platform to establish an online presence, spread brand awareness and ultimately connect with a target audience. By effectively leveraging the power of organic social media, small businesses can not only survive but thrive in a competitive market in today's digital age.
